Klip dagga has long been revered in South African traditional medicine, particularly among the Khoisan and Zulu people, who used it for both spiritual and therapeutic purposes. The name “dagga” is actually misleading. It is a colloquial term for cannabis, despite wild dagga having no relation to the cannabis plant.

In spiritual rituals, wild dagga flower petals were believed to promote a connection to ancestors. Similar to how we still use klip dagga flower today, healers traditionally used the flower petals and leaves in teas, smokes, and poultices to treat everything from snake bites to fevers.

With its euphoric effects, wild dagga also held ceremonial value. Plus, it is associated with lions’ courage and strength, cementing it as a vital part of rituals.

Dosage and Preparation

While you should always start with a low dose and adjust based on your body’s response, here are the general guidelines for dosage and preparation for wild dagga flower petals:

Tea: Steep 1-2 teaspoons (about 1 gram) of dried petals in hot water for 10-15 minutes. Strain and drink. It may be combined with honey or lemon.

Smoke Blend: Use as a natural tobacco, cannabis alternative, or in herbal smoking blends. It can be mixed with other relaxing herbs like blue lotus.

Extract: You can also have wild dagga in extract form, typically 250-500mg per serving.

Warnings and Contraindications

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should not use klip dagga flower. Wild dagga may cause mild dizziness or sedation, especially in high doses. Avoid driving or operating machinery following use. Individuals with lung sensitivities should not smoke and use the tea form instead. Wild dagga flower petals are not indicated for use in children.
